In August 1999 youth leader Joyce Kawakami noticed that some of the teens in the group were obviously not getting enough nutritious food to eat. She started bringing groceries to the weekly meeting for the young people to take home. The word got out and others started asking Joyce for help. This began a regular distribution of food to the poor out of the trunk of her car. As more families began coming to her for help she gave up her sedan for a pick-up truck.
In 2002 the program moved into a room at Grace Bible Church in Kahului, Maui and it took the name Feed My Sheep. While at Grace Bible other churches joined the effort and growth continued. Today Feed My Sheep is a coalition of church congregations, collaborating ministries and corporate sponsors. Our command center now resides in donated space at HC&S on Hansen Road in Pu`unene. A chain-link fence, a few old trucks and Matson shipping containers serve as offices, storage and workspace for preparing to serve our community every week.
